Honoring The Spirit Through Loving Care And Service
Chaplaincy
Sojourn offers a nonjudgmental ministry of presence, and spiritual care training, for the broad multicultural mix of patients, their loved ones, the staff of San Francisco General Hospital, and the community.
Founded in 1982 in response to the needs of patients and their loved ones for loving and respectful spiritual care and support during the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Sojourn Chaplaincy seeks to complete the circle of care at SFGH. While hospital staff provide resources for physical, mental and emotional health, Sojourn attends to the spiritual needs of patients and staff.
Sojourn is structured as one chaplaincy service comprising different traditions. Our staff and volunteers include clergy and lay people from Roman Catholic and Protestant Christian traditions, as well as Buddhist, Jewish, and other belief systems. Sojourn Chaplaincy is committed to supporting the values, beliefs and faith of those we serve.
Part of Sojourn's ability to provide spiritual care in a multiplicity of traditions comes from ongoing relationships with area faith leadership. We are honored by our connections with the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, the Archdiocese of San Francisco (Roman Catholic), the Episcopal Diocese of California, and many other local worship communities.
San Francisco General Hospital
SFGH is a Level 1 Trauma Center, a prestigious research center in collaboration with the UCSF School of Medicine, home of the only Psychiatric Emergency Service in San Francisco and provider of extensive in-patient and out-patient medical services to the diverse people of the San Francisco Bay Area. SFGH is operated by the City and County of San Francisco and is strongly committed to serving every individual who enters its doors regardless of ability to pay. Many of the patients we serve are socially and economically marginalized, homeless, suffer from mental illness or substance abuse or are victims of trauma or violence. SFGH is a unique facility. With its bustling lobby and extensive grounds, it is a city unto itself. And yet, with staff singularly committed to providing excellent medical care to those individuals who face the most extensive barriers in accessing care, SFGH also has the feel of a loving family.
